Dr. Kenneth Saltman
Dr. Kenneth Saltman - Passed peacefully away at home at the age of 84 on Sunday, July 4, 2010 in the loving presence of his family. Left with fond memories are his wife, Peggy; sons, William, David, and Peter; daughter, Jane; sisters, Irene and Rea; grandchildren, Jennifer, Ben, Evan, Angela and Michael; along with a large number of friends. Kenneth was born in Ebbw Vale, Wales, on October 18, 1925, but moved at an early age to Edinburgh, Scotland where he attended the Royal High School, and later, the University of Edinburgh where he received his medical degree in 1947. One of his first jobs was as a ship’s doctor aboard a whaling supply vessel out of the Port of Leith, Ken traveled the long voyage back and forth to the company’s base in the Antarctic on the Island of South Georgia before taking up a position with Cable and Wireless on transoceanic cable repair ships, working in the North Atlantic and off the coast of Africa. It was a chance conversation with a radio operator in Aden, Yemen, that eventually led to Ken and Peggy immigrating to Newfoundland in 1954. They initially settled in Adams Cove but in the late 1950s moved to Harbour Grace, where they have lived for many years. Ken provided medical, obstetrical and anesthesia services to the people of Trinity Bay and Conception Bay North for over 40 years but always found time for his family. He was a talented artist, donating many of his works to the Hospital Auxiliary fundraisers, and avid reader and a prolific gardener. At Kenneth’s request a cremation has taken place. A gathering for the celebration of Ken’s life will take place at St. Paul\'s Anglican Church Hall, Harbour Grace on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 from 4 - 7 P.M. A special thanks to the staff of the Carbonear General Hospital for their compassion and care, Dr. Le Feuvre and Dr. Gerry Power for all their help and kindness.
